Mites
DLYHA views the Mite/8U and Termite levels as a connected pathway, helping kids develop their skills, teamwork, and passion for the game in an age-appropriate way.
Players may move between levels as they progress — advanced Termites may join Mites, while newer skaters might start at the Termite level. The goal is to keep every player challenged, confident, and having fun.
Age Eligibility
The Mite (8U) program welcomes boys and girls generally ages 7 and 8.
Equipment
All equipment is provided free of charge — just bring your energy and excitement!
Season Format
The Mite season begins in mid-October and runs through late February. Expect practices on Monday and Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings. Most Saturdays feature our own in-house Mite Hockey League, where players get a taste of real game action — goals, cheers, and all.
Mites also have a couple of optional out-of-town jamborees or scrimmages during the season and typically host a hometown jamboree to wrap things up. Travel is never required — it’s all about fun, friendships, and learning the game.
When winter hits and the outdoor rink at People's Park opens (right across from the arena), Mites and Termites gather for our legendary Hotdog Hockey Fridays — a free, optional night of unstructured skating under the lights. Parent volunteers keep the grill fired up and the hotdogs coming while the kids skate until they can’t anymore.
Coaches and the Hockey Director group Mites by skill level to maximize engagement, development, and fun — and adjust as players grow.
The Mite program follows USA Hockey’s “Fundamentals” stage of the American Development Model and Minnesota Hockey Development Model, ensuring a balance of skill-building, teamwork, and love for the game.
At this level, players start to really find their stride, make plays, and fall in love with being part of a team — the heart of the DL Youth Hockey experience.
