Mites

Mites / 8U is generally for players ages 7–9. Mites and Termites work together to introduce players to hockey at a pace that fits their age and experience. An experienced Termite may be ready to move up, while a new skater of Mite age may benefit from starting in Termites. Placement can change as players develop throughout the season.

Equipment is available free of charge

The Mite / 8U season runs from mid-October through February. Players practice Monday and Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings. For most of the season, Saturday ice time becomes games in our in-house Mite Hockey League.

Players may join up to two out-of-town scrimmages or jamborees in December and January. DLYHA also hosts a jamboree in February. Travel is always optional.

Once the outdoor rink opens at Peoples Park, across Rossman Avenue from the arena, Mites and Termites can join Hotdog Hockey on Friday evenings, weather permitting. These free, informal skates run from 5:30 p.m. until the kids are ready to call it a night. Parent volunteers take turns serving hotdogs and snacks, with costs reimbursed by DLYHA.

Coaches and the Hockey Director group players with others of similar ability so everyone can have fun, stay engaged, and develop their skills. Groups may change as players grow throughout the season.

Our Mite program focuses on the FUNdamentals stage of USA Hockey’s American Development Model and follows Minnesota Hockey’s Minnesota Development Model. DLYHA also uses the USA Hockey Skills Progression guidelines to support player development.
