Peewee
This is where hockey really starts to take shape. Players at this level begin to combine skill, teamwork, and strategy while continuing to develop a true love for the game.
Age Eligibility
The Peewee/12U level is for players generally ages 11 and 12.
Equipment
If your player needs gear, just reach out to our Equipment Manager — we’ll make sure they have what they need to hit the ice ready to play.
Season Format
The Peewee/12U season begins in mid-October and runs through late winter, featuring a fast-paced mix of practices, games, and tournaments.
Early in the season, players take part in evaluations run by qualified, independent evaluators — former players and coaches. This helps ensure a fair, balanced process where each athlete is placed on the team that best matches their skill level and development goals.
Each season typically includes multiple teams, giving every player a place to compete and grow.
Travel & Competition
Travel games typically start in mid-season, with each team aiming for about 35 games and up to three tournaments throughout the year. Game counts may vary slightly by level, but the focus is always on the right mix of competition, development, and fun.
The Peewee and 12U seasons include a balance of team practices, skill sessions, and small-area games — designed to sharpen skills and boost hockey IQ while keeping the energy high.
Player Development
This level follows USA Hockey’s “Learn to Train” phase within the American Development Model (ADM) and the Minnesota Hockey Development Model.
DLYHA’s player development philosophy emphasizes skating, passing, puck control, decision-making, and teamwork — preparing players to think the game, not just play it.
At the Peewee/12U level, athletes begin to see the ice differently, take pride in being great teammates, and discover what it means to truly compete — all while keeping the fun alive.
That’s DL Youth Hockey — development, teamwork, and love of the game.
